 ACCOMPLISHEMENTS: PUBLIC SAFETY

Mayor Duffy is Improving Public Safety:

  • Rochester Police Officer using the AFR (Automated Field Reporting) SystemDecreased violent crime
While there is much more work to be done, especially to dramatically reduce the homicide rate, overall violent crime, from aggravated assaults to robbery, is down 17% since 2006.

  • Taken 1,962 guns off the street.

  • More police officers are fighting crime. Roll Call
Despite budget deficits, Mayor Duffy realigned City priorities and has hired 131 new police officers since taking office.

The police recruitment and hiring process has been streamlined from two years to seven months – allowing officers to be trained and on the street more quickly.

  • Rochester Police OfficersInstituted a citywide curfew program to protect
    youth from violence.

We are seeing positive responses and results. 587 juveniles have been given warnings and directed home and 342 juveniles have been taken to Hillside Children’s Center for follow-up since the curfew was put in place.

  • Using surveillance cameras to deter criminals in high risk areas PAC TAC
Mayor Duffy worked with New York State Assemblymember Susan John and Senator Joe Robach to get the funding necessary to install 50 cameras throughout the city.

  • Engaging the community to help fight crime.
Adopted a holistic approach to taking back our streets with “Pastors on Patrol” and “Pathways to Peace” efforts, involving our churches and youth in both street outreach and meaningful crime prevention.

Improvements to PAC-TAC have caused an increase in membership in the police-civilian partnership to help improve neighborhood safety.

  • Mayor Duffy at Clean Sweep Implemrequent neighborhood sweeps to clean-up challenged streets.
"Operation Uplift" is a community collaboration organized by the City's NET Bureau where operatives from various government agencies sweep neighborhoods looking for signs of illegal activity and unsafe living conditions, check on the welfare of children and seek quality of life improvements.

More than 50 “Uplifts” have been held so far.

  • Bringing data-focused, research driven innovations to fighting crime.
Initiated the Center for Public Safety Initiatives, in partnership with RIT, to implement effective crime control strategies.

  • Rochester FirefightersEngaged an aggressive Firefighter Recruitment Campaign
Working to increase the number of women and minorities in the ranks of the Rochester Fire Department.

  • Distributed more than 2380 free smoke and 940 carbon monoxide detectors to needy families in our neighborhoods. Firefighters go door-to-door regularly to check smoke detector batteries, answer questions and provide detectors when necessary.
